HIV Treatment

HIV or human immunodeficiency virus is a virus that attacks the immune system, making it difficult for the body to fight infection and disease. If HIV is not treated, it eventually progresses to AIDs (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), the last and most severe form of HIV. People with AIDS are more likely to develop certain illnesses or infections, because of their weakened immune systems, like tuberculosis, pneumonia or cancers. Having HIV does not mean you have AIDS. The good news is that people with HIV are living longer, because of better drugs that slow the rate at which HIV infection progresses to AIDs.

HIV Treatment

Currently available antiretroviral drugs do not cure people of HIV infection or AIDS, but HIV treatments have been developed to fight both HIV infection and its associated infections and cancers. Drugs may slow the spread of HIV in the body and delay the onset of infections, but they do not prevent transmission of HIV to other individuals. Some drug side effects can be severe.

A number of drugs are available to help treat infections to which people with HIV are especially prone. In addition to antiretroviral therapy, adults with HIV whose CD4+ T-cell counts drop below 200 are given treatment to prevent the occurrence of pneumonia. HIV-infected individuals who develop Kaposi's sarcoma or other cancers are treated with radiation, chemotherapy or injections of alpha interferon, a genetically engineered naturally occurring protein.

The most effective treatment for HIV is highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), which is a combination of several antiretroviral drugs that aim to control the amount of virus in your body. HIV treatment should involve keeping the immune system strong, taking drugs as prescribed and monitoring the white blood cell count, to slow the multiplication of the virus in your body. Because HIV can become resistant to each class of drugs, combination treatment is necessary to effectively suppress the virus.

A huge amount of research, development and testing of HIV vaccines and new treatments for HIV are being done. Researchers are also investigating exactly how HIV damages the immune system. This HIV research is suggesting new and more effective targets for HIV drugs, vaccines and HIV treatments.
